With instruction and practical training in line with legal, workplace and community considerations, Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and other Australian national peak clinical bodies, this first aid course teaches the skills and knowledge to recognise emergencies and provide immediate and effective first aid treatment to any person suffering a sudden illness or injury.

The course covers assessing the casualty, providing safety, accessing emergency services, and using resources to provide first aid, such as providing CPR and using a defibrillator, administering an autoinjector for anaphylaxis, administering asthma medication, assisting someone choking, using appropriate immobilisation techniques for envenomation, fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains, managing casualties with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock.

You will learn basic anatomy, physiology and the differences between adults, children and infants relating to CPR, the importance of the chain of survival, written and verbal reporting of incident details, reviewing incidents to improve own skills and response times, to recognise psychological impacts, and seeking help as required.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Refresher Face to Face contact time of at least 6 Hours

Entry Requirements

An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

An official form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID).
Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills including CPR

Online learning: Students must have basic digital literacy skills to navigate online platforms, complete assessments, and access course materials. Before enrolment, students should assess their ability to engage in online learning. Support is available where required. The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and associated assessment tasks.

Delivery mode: Online with face-to-face - The online pre-course learning and theory assessment is expected to take approximately 5.5 hours to complete. These timeframes are estimates. Individuals with prior experience in similar training may complete the online component in less time, while those new to the subject may need more time to complete all the learning content and theory questions.

Assessment Requirements

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Documentation – The student must complete all documentation according to the required standard:

Complete a first aid incident report form based on the simulated first aid scenario

Theory assessment: A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions.

What is the difference between HLTAID011 and HLTAID010?

The unit HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid covers a comprehensive range of skills needed to provide first aid response, including CPR, managing various injuries, and using an AED, suitable for a wide range of emergency situations. In contrast, HLTAID010 - Provide Basic Emergency Life Support focuses on essential life support skills, such as performing CPR and managing a basic range of life-threatening emergencies, aimed at those who need to respond quickly and effectively to immediate life-threatening situations with limited first aid equipment.

Generally speaking the unit HLTAID011 is the minimum qualification for a workplace first aid officer therefore HLTAID010 would not meet that requirements. This can vary based on location and industry so please check with the local authorities.

Does HLTAID011 include anaphylaxis?

Yes the HLTAID011 course does include information on allergies and anaphylaxis as well as the practical skills involved. In some industries such as child care or schools this will not be sufficient to meet industry requirements and students may need additional qualifications such as the unit HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting or the stand alone course 22578VIC Course in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis.

It is important to check what regulations relating to anaphylaxis apply to you and your role.

How often are you required to complete HLTAID011?

The course HLTAID011 Provide First Aid has an industry recommended renewal period of 3 years. After this time most regulators will not consider the qualification to be current and meeting the requirements for first aid in the workplace. Additionally the CPR component, called HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation will need to be updated every 12 months to meet industry standards for a first aider in the workplace.

What practical skills are involved in HLTAID011?

The practical skills involved in the unit HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid include:

Providing effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation on adults, and infants, including the use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). It should be noted that students must demonstrate at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor and an infant manikin placed on a surface.

Managing casualties, with the following:

anaphylaxis
asthma
non-life-threatening bleeding
choking
envenomation, using pressure immobilisation
fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains, using appropriate immobilisation techniques
minor wound cleaning and dressing
nosebleed
shock

Students will also be required to respond to at least one simulated first aid scenario where they will be expected to demonstrate the following:

identifying the casualty’s illness or injury through history, signs and symptoms
using personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
providing appropriate first aid treatment
conveying incident details to emergency services or advising casualty on any required post incident action
providing an accurate verbal and written report of the incident
reviewing the incident.

Can HLTAID011 be fully completed online?

There are a number of practical skills required to be performed using specialised training equipment in order to be deemed competent. It is for this reason that in most cases the students will need to attend a training location for at least part of the training (depending on the selected delivery mode). In some exceptional circumstances where the full range of training equipment is available and it can be demonstrated that it is not possible to attend a training location (for example working in a remote location) the an application can be made by your Training Provider to assess the skills via teleconferencing. This application will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

Do I need to enrol in HLTAID009 if I am already enrolled in HLTAID011

No, the contents for HLTAID009 is fully incorporated into the unit HLTAID011 therefore you will be issued with both units when you enrol and successfully complete the HLTAID011 course. Your certificates will state the industry recommended renewal date for both the HLTAID009 (12 months after the completion date) and HLTAID011 (3 years after the completion date).

I have a current HLTAID009 certificate, can I skip that part of HLTAID011

No, to be deemed competent in the unit HLTAID011 you must demonstrate competency in all elements of the course at the time of assessment, this includes the elements you will have obtained in HLTAID009.

Is there a minimum age for undertaking HLTAID011

Although we do not set a minimum age for undertaking First Aid training, all participants must be physically able to perform the skills and have sufficient maturity for the content delivered. Generally speaking we would not recommend this course for those under 12 years of age.

For younger students there are a great range of non-accredited courses available that can be customised for the age of the student cohort.

When undertaking HLTAID011 using the delivery mode online with face to face assessment, how long do I need to allow for the online work?

You should allow 4 to 6 hours to complete the online pre-course work element of the training. This will involved viewing video content and completing assessment tools. It is important that this is fully completed prior to the training and your instructor may not allow you to complete your practical assessment if the pre-course work is not completed prior to the practical session.

When being assessed for CPR as part of HLTAID011 do you need to provide rescue breaths?

Yes. The requirements for rescue breaths for part of the requirements of the unit of competency and also are still recommended in the Australian Resuscitation Council Guidelines which are the basis for the content delivered in this course.

What are the differences between HLTAID011 and HLTAID003?

HLTAID011 is the current unit of competency for First Aid. It superseded the previous version (HLTAID003) in October 2020. The unit contains very similar knowledge however students wishing to undertake first aid training must now complete the HLTAID011 units as HLTAID003 is no longer able to be delivered.

What is the difference between First Aid (HLTAID011) and Advanced First Aid (HLTAID014)?

HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid is a broad unit covering essential first aid skills for a variety of emergency situations, including CPR, managing injuries, and using an AED, suitable for general community and workplace settings. In contrast, HLTAID014 - Provide Advanced First Aid extends beyond basic first aid to include more advanced skills and knowledge required to manage complex situations, such as administering medications, using advanced first aid equipment, and coordinating a first aid response in high-risk environments. Essentially, HLTAID014 is designed for those needing a higher level of competence to handle more severe and multifaceted medical emergencies.

Is HLTAID011 the same as Level 2 First Aid?

HLTAID011 is the industry standard for first aid in the workplace. The terminology level 1 and level 2 first aid has been replaced in modern first aid courses. Previously, when level 2 first aid was available, it was the industry standard for first aid in the workplace so in that respect they are equivalent however additional knowledge and assessment requirements apply to HLTAID011.

Can I still use my HLTAID003 certificate instead of completing the HLTAID011 unit?

Both HLTAID003 and HLTAID011 are considered sufficient to meet the requirements for first aid in the workplace however as HLTAID003 was superseded a number of years ago in almost all cases it will have passed its industry recommended renewal date and therefore no longer be considered current for workplace first aid officers. Students undertaking first aid training can no longer enrol in HLTAID003 as it has been replaced with HLTAID011.

How long is the face to face element of HLTAID011?

We have a number of delivery modes available for HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, each mode has a different face to face duration.

Below is a summary of the delivery modes and face to face commitment:

Online with Face to Face - 2 hours

The full title for this delivery mode is online training with face to face assessment. Courses using this delivery mode have all of the knowledge content and assessments completed online before you attend a short face to face assessment session where you trainer will briefly recap the learning and assess you in the practical skills component of the course. This mode offers the shortest face to face delivery option.

Face to Face - 7.5 hours

As the name suggests the face to face delivery mode involves all course content being delivered during class time. Using this delivery mode there is no requirement to complete pre-course work and all of the knowledge, along with the theory assessment and skills assessments are delivered in the face to face session with your Trainer. This mode has the longest face to face delivery component.

Blended Delivery - 6 hours

With blended delivery the student is required to complete a small amount of online learning prior to the face to face component of the training. This online learning provides the learner with background information and consequently reduces the face to face duration of the training. Although some questions will be asked in the pre-course work, all of the formal theory assessment and skills assessments occur in the face to face component of the course. Within this course your Trainer will still cover all of the theory elements of the training however will move through at a faster rate when compared with the face to face delivery mode. This offers a reduced duration when compared with face to face delivery mode.

Refresher - 6 hours

With refresher training the face to face component of the training is the same as it is for blended delivery. The only difference is due to the student possessing a current or recently expired certificate in the same course (less than 3 months after the renewal date) they do not need to complete the online pre-course work component.

Blended/Refresher - 6 hours

When enrolling in this course the system will identify if you possess the relevant certificate to qualify for refresher training. You will also be given an opportunity to upload certificates issued by another RTO when confirming enrolment details. The system will then automatically select either blended or refresher mode for you. As the face to face component is the same this will only change the requirement to complete pre-course work.
